HELLO LOVES. As you may be aware, a new YouTube comment system is in place and it simply isn’t working. Here’s the current situation as it applies to my channel:
Somewhere between 85-95% of new comments are automatically flagged as spam despite the fact they’re perfectly valid. People don’t know their comment has been auto-flagged, it just disappears.
Of the comments that do get through, the majority are either links to viruses, actual spam, jump scares, or giant ASCII art pics. (Usually of dicks.) Links are now allowed and there is no character limit. Many links are disguised as an “Expand this comment” message. The new system seems to give preference to comments posted via Google+, which spammers are taking advantage of. The “flag for spam” option is gone so there can be no self-moderation.
What comments remain are ranked higher if they have more replies. So if people respond to a message containing a virus link saying “Look out! Virus in that comment!” it will actually rank that virus comment higher. And naturally, one of the things people reply to the most are abusive, bullying or racist comments. People tell them to shut up or point out why what they’re doing is horrible. Abuse is now actively pushed to the top of the comments.
It’s not possible to block virus links through the word filter. You can’t simply block “http”. It is technically possible to manually block some of the countless hundreds of URL shorteners used to post the links, but some are too short - the blacklist has a minimum character requirement. So the virus-peddlers are gravitating towards using the ones that can’t be blocked, obviously.
It is possible to edit links, meaning spammers can establish a genuine set of positive replies to something and then change it to virus delivery later.
Obviously I’m not best pleased with potentially damaging links, or the vast majority of people being silenced without their knowledge. It’s obviously impossible for me to manually moderate the thousands of comments I get every day. As a result I’ll be disabling comments on new videos until this is sorted out. All you’d see if they were turned on are virus links and cocks, and there are plenty of sites serving that kind of stuff already… And besides - there’s less than a 15% chance of your comment being visible anyway.
This isn’t an isolated problem. Other people far more successful than me are having to do the same thing - Pewdiepie, Totalbiscuit, DanNerdCubed, a lot of the Yogscast etc.
